Mkango - Songwe Hill, SE Malawi - Feb 2015

Andrew Jackson visited Mkango's Songwe Hill REE (Rare Earth Elements) property in SE Malawi, on Feb 16-17 2015. Access to the deposit was slower than usual, given the very heavy rains that hit the country in the previous few weeks. However, there is an all weather road to within a few miles of the property and then ungraded tracks from there to site.  There is also a new railway line to the Mozambique coastal port of Nacala that passes within 60kms of the deposit, a critical consideration for both import of reagents and export of product.

The REES are hosted by a carbonatite intrusion, part of the so-called Chilwa Alkaline Province which covers the southern portion of the country.  Mkango has defined a reserve of 8.48 Mt @ 1.6% TREO, with potential to increase this tonnage significantly with further drilling.  Initial metallurgical tests suggest that an REE concentrate can be produced through flotation of the REE minerals (synchysite and apatite), followed by acid leaching at ambient temperature and pressure, to upgrade the concentrate.  The product would be suited to hi-tech magnet production.

Mkango is currently working on a DFS for the project.
