Elgin Mining – Bjorkdalgruvan gold mine, northern Sweden - April 2013

Neil Adshead visited Elgin Mining’s Bjorkdalgruvan gold mine in the Skellefteå district, northern Sweden on 22 April 2013.  The small, profitable, open pit and underground gold mine has operated for twenty years, producing more than 1 M oz from gold-bearing quartz veins hosted in a granodiorite intrusion.  It is one of the lowest grade underground gold mines in the world, with a head grade of <1.5 g/t.  The cost benefits of operating in Sweden include a skilled and cost-competitive labour force, innovative design (think ‘Ikea’) and automation, no state royalty and recently reduced national corporate tax.
